Arleigh Albert Burke, U.S. Naval Officer, was born near Boulder, Colorado on 19 October, 1901. He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1923 and served in the Navy until his retirement in 1961. A brilliant officer during World War II, Burke fell into disfavor in 1949 due to his opposition to adoption of the Air Force B-36 aircraft, but still achieved promotion to rear admiral and eventually selection as Chief of Naval Operations in 1955. Henry Irving Hodes (1899-1962) was born in Washington, D.C. He received his commission in the infantry from West Point in 1920 and saw service in the Philippines with the 26th Cavalry from 1933 to 1936. He commanded the 112th Infantry, in 1944 and reached the rank of brigadier general in January 1945. He was assistant division commander of the 1st Cavalry Division, then the 7th Infantry Division in 1949 and 1950.
